Customizing the menu bar

The menu bar can be fully customized to add just the navigation you need. You can add links to frequently used Papyrs features, favorite or important pages, folders, interesting external links, or add custom dropdown menus with more links.

Opening the menu bar editor

To edit the menu bar, go to Settings, and select Menu Bar. When you have multiple Subsites within your site, each Subsite will have its own menu bar which you can customize.
The menu bar will now become editable.

Editing or removing items

To edit existing menu items, first open the menu bar editor (see above). Then, just click on an item to change it:
The edit options available depend on the type of menu bar item. When the menu item is a simple link to a page, you can change the link or remove the link. When the item is a custom dropdown menu, you can add or remove sub-items.

Adding new menu items

To add new top-level items to the menu bar, open the menu bar editor, and click the Add item to menu bar option:
Which shows the dialog below with the different kind of menu items you can add:
💡️ This section is about adding new top-level items. To add sub-items to an existing Custom Menu, click on the menu item in the menu bar, and then click Add Item. Folder Menus automatically show all pages within a folder, so in order to add a sub-item to a Folder Menu, simply add a page to that folder.

Creating sub-menus (dropdowns)

There are two ways of adding dropdown menus in Papyrs:

Folder menus

A folder menu will automatically show all pages saved within that Folder. When you add or remove a page to or from a Folder, the menu is automatically updated.

To add or change a Folder Menu, first open the menu bar editor

To add a new Folder menu, click Add item to menu bar and select Folder Menu.

To make changes to an existing Folder menu, simply click on the menu bar item. Here you can remove the menu item, or you can change the folder you want to show. You can't add or remove sub-items directly: the sub-items are determined by which pages are in the folder. If you want to create a dropdown menu with a custom collection of pages, use the Custom Menu below.

Custom Menus

A Custom Menu is a dropdown menu to which you can add pages or links as sub-items. Unlike a Folder Menu, which automatically shows all pages within a certain folder, sub-items in a Custom Menu are added manually. That way you can show pages from different folders, or show pages in any order you like, or mix in links to pages with external links.

To add or change a Custom Menu, first open the menu bar editor

To add a new Custom Menu, click Add item to menu bar and select Custom Menu.

To make changes to an existing Custom menu, simply click on the menu bar item. Here you can add a new sub-item, remove a sub-item, reorder the items, or remove the entire custom menu altogether. (Note: when removing page sub-items, the pages themselves are not removed; it simply removes the dropdown item in the menu).
